Hang Ten, Superstar
Including an old CD and a cut & paste minicomic
Happy Saturday, Jazz Pickles.
Pittsburgh is still digging out of last week’s snow-dump, but things are humming here in the comic studio, and my new blog post is ready for your perusal and perplexity.
The most recent cartoons to cross the drawing board included snowpeople, fairy tale characters, a doomsayer, birds, and Ludwig van Beethoven.
Looking Ahead & Looking Back
The latest batch of yuks also includes a depiction of an attempted robbery.
Our throwback art is the cover illustration for a double CD set released in 2003 by Italian label OmOm Music, featuring various artists reinterpreting the “Jesus Christ Superstar” soundtrack as surf music.
Here’s the art without the text. I inked it by hand and colored it digitally.
I’d love to share some of the music, but it’s not generally available to stream, at least here in the US. You’ll have to use your imagination.
This oddity is an artifact from my early days of self-published minicomix. I called my tiny imprint No Way Comix. Recombinant Timmy was one of my "secret publications." These were odd items that I distributed to friends, but never advertised or sold. I believe the print run was fifty copies.
To create the book, I dismantled a copy of Timmy #715, a 1956 Dell children's comic book. I cut about half the pages into individual panels, and then cut out the word balloons from the remaining pages. I put the panels and balloons into separate bags, shook them up, and pulled enough to make a minicomic. I assembled the balloons and panels in the order that I pulled them and photocopied the resulting mess on pink bond paper. Surprisingly, it produced a nearly linear story, complete with what could almost be a punchline at the end.
The cover is an "intentional" collage made from the original comic book cover.
Here’s a rediscovered scan of the original pasteup showing half of the pages. I used masking tape and rubber cement, so this isn’t archival art, and the pasted word balloon on the upper-left panel fell off sometime in the past 37 years. I might still have it in a folder with the art, but I’m currently unable to locate it.
Who knows, if I ever find the originals, maybe I’ll reprint it in color.
Exquisite Corpse of the Week
During one of our regular get-togethers for coffee, my brother (M), great-nephews (E and R), and I (W) created some exquisite corpse drawings. We used sheets from a sketchbook whose pages can be removed and reinserted. When the book is filled, the young ones will have a weird souvenir of our breakfast meetings.
Meanwhile, I’ll continue to share them here.
Thanks for subscribing and for reading Bizarro. We appreciate every one of you.
Your cartoonist,
Wayno
